The Condition

Craniosynostosis: a brief explanation.

Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more of the fibrous sutures in an infant's skull fuse prematurely, before the brain has completed its growth. The result is abnormal skull shape and, in severe or untreated cases, increased intracranial pressure that can affect neurological development, vision, and cognitive function. Surgical correction typically involves cranial vault remodelling — releasing the fused suture and reshaping the skull to allow normal brain expansion. The procedure is performed in early infancy, often between 6 and 12 months of age, in collaboration with a neurosurgical team. The precision of the reconstruction has life-long structural consequences.

The surgical approach.

Craniosynostosis surgery at this practice is performed in Cape Town in collaboration with a dedicated neurosurgical team. Dr. Douglas's role is the craniofacial reconstruction component — the reshaping and structural restoration of the calvarium following suturectomy. The goal is not aesthetic correction. It is the restoration of the architectural conditions that allow a child's brain to develop without constraint.

Craniosynostosis is one of the most underserved surgical needs on the African continent. The complexity of the surgery, the scarcity of trained craniofacial surgeons, and the lack of awareness in primary care settings combine to leave thousands of children without the intervention that would allow their brains to develop normally. This practice maintains craniosynostosis as a clinical commitment — a seed toward what will eventually become a dedicated craniofacial surgery centre and fellowship programme for African plastic and neurosurgeons. That work takes time to build properly. It is being built.
